Samsung transforma al celular en computadora de escritorio 101
La idea la inició Microsoft en 2015 con el Lumia 950, un celular que conectado a una base se transformaba en una PC con Windows 10. La idea era prometedora, pero la nula adopción de Windows 10 como sistema operativo móvil condenó los esfuerzos. Ahora es Samsung quien con el Galaxy S8 retoma la idea de convertir al celular en una computadora mediante un accesorio, DeX.
La transición entre la experiencia móvil y la del trabajo desde el escritorio, según mostró Samsung esta mañan durante la presentación del Galaxy S8, está perfectamente integrada. El celular se coloca sobre la base que a su vez se conecta a un teclado, ratón y monitor para transformarse en una computadora basada en Android, pero optimizada para su uso detrás del escritorio. DeX, además, proporciona enfriamiento al teléfono y le añade puertos USB que pueden ocuparse para conectar las memorias que, en la época de apogeo de la nube, todavía gozan de amplia popularidad.
“DeX fue diseñado para mejorar la productividad de los profesionistas móviles, pues reduce la necesidad de cargar con varios dispositivos de cómputo”, dijo Injong Rhee, jefe de Investigación y Desarrollo de Software de Samsung. La clave está, según apuntó, en las colaboraciones con Microsoft y Adoble, dos de las compañías líderes de software para el sector empresarial. Toda la paquetería Office, así como los programas Acrobat Reader y Lightroom han sido optimizadas para DeX.
Si bien Samsung no es la primera compañía en explorar la idea de convertir al celular en el dispositivo de cómputo central, la popularidad que goza la marca Galaxy podría popularizar la visión. Se calcula que durante la primera mitad del año pasado Samsung vendió 13.3 millones de celulares Galaxy S7 edge. Esta cifra podría ser rebasada por el Galaxy S8, y por tanto, habría un margen mayor de adopción. De hecho, el accesorio será empaquetado junto con el smartphone en algunas regiones.
Apple también ha mostrado interés en esta tendencia. El 20 de septiembre de 2016 Apple registró una patente que describe una computadora portátil a la que se le conecta un iPhone. Con procesadores cada vez más potentes, parece que el fin de la computadora como la conocemos se acerca.
